Thursday Thirteen - Quotes

Thirteen of Ruth's Favourite Quotes
(I ended up working longer today then expected, that is why I am late again, I don't think I like working...it takes me away from blogging!!)

1. "A mother who radiates self-love and acceptance actually vaccinates her daughter against low self-esteem" - Naomi Wolf (I heard this on Oprah and loved what it meant...)

2. "A book is like a garden in your pocket" - Arab Proverb (I have this one on my business cards for Usborne Books

3. "Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. Life is either a daring adventure or nothing." - Helen Keller (I love daring adventures;-)

4. "If a child lives with criticism, he learns to condemn.
If a child lives with hostility, she learns to fight.
If a child lives with ridicule, he learns to be shy.
If a child lives with shame, she learns to feel guilty.
If a child lives with tolerance, he learns to be patient.
If a child lives with encouragement, she learns confidence.
If a child lives with praise, he learns to appreciate.
If a child lives with fairness, she learns justice.
If a child lives with security, he learns to have faith.
If a child lives with approval, she learns to like herself.
If a child lives with acceptance and friendship, he learns to find love in the world."
- Dorothy Law Nolte (I have always loved reading this. I need to type it up and hang it on our wall to remember what we are doing!!)

5. "The Bible calls debt a curse and children a blessing. But in our culture we apply for a curse and reject blessings. Something is wrong with this picture." - Doug Phillips (One day I read this in an email, and I thought, Oh my goodness, I never thought of it like that before!!)

6. "It takes a village to raise a child." - African Proverb (This is so true. We went and stayed at an indian reservation one time. This was on a window sticker that they sent home afterwards. When we were there, the kids were playing but all the adults were taking care of them. It really is a good thing when you know that your kids can go out to play and someone is watching them, if you can't, so they can't get into trouble!!)

7. "Hope" is the thing with feathers---That perches in the soul--And sings the tune without the words---And never stops--at all!!!" (I am not sure where I found this, if anyone knows please let me know too!!)

8. "Today's mighty oak is just yesterday's nut that held its ground" (again, not sure where I found this, please let me know if you do)

9. "Thank goodness I was never sent to school; it would have rubbed off some of the originality. Beatrix Potter (I am a homeschooler!!;-)

10. "Tell me, I may forget; show me, then I may remember; but involve me, and I'll understand." - Chinese proverb (how true is this??)

11. "I think we consider too much the good luck of the early bird, and not enough the bad luck of the early worm." - Franklin D. Roosevelt (have you ever thought of the poor worm?)

12. ""Fear less, hope more;
Whine less, breathe more;
Talk less, say more;
Hate less, love more;
And all good things are yours."
-Swedish Proverb (life as it should be in a nutshell!)

13. "Dance like there's nobody watching
Love like you'll never get hurt
Sing like there's nobody listening
Live like it's heaven on earth
And speak from the heart to be heard.
-William W. Purkey (love this one)

  1. Ruth, I'm not sure, but I think your #7 is Emily Dickinson. The reason I think that is all her poems can be sung to the tune of "The Yellow Rose of Texas". :)

    Came from Owlhaven, this is my first visit to your blog.
