Great Christmas idea

I have been trying to come up with a Christmas countdown activity to do with the kids. We always try to do something different and i was totally stumped this year. In the past we have done a Jesse Tree (this is a great project to do together), we have done the ring chains with different activities for each day (cook breakfast, make cookies, make cards etc...), a felt advent calendar with treats in them... I wanted to do something fun and creative that we could all help with...so, here goes, if you like the idea or are going to do it too, let me know!! I will post pics as we go along.

So, I saw somewhere a felt advent calendar with a Christmas tree on it. Then there were 24 pockets...in each one was a decoration to hang on the tree. I thought this would be a cute idea, but I really like to focus on the reason for Christmas, not just the presents and the days leading up to them!!

What I have decided to do is get a large piece of felt and have it be the background, probably red or dark red. Then cut out a large green Christmas tree. Then make little pockets and write on the numbers 1-24. Just like the other calendars. Instead of just hanging a regular little ornament we will combine the Jesse tree devotions with what we hang instead.

So, on the first day of the Jesse tree, we will put the Christmas tree on the background, then on the second day we will hang up a little earth, 3rd day an apple and a snake, then an ark and a rainbow. If you check out the site listed above, you will see the designs.

All these symbols go along with a devotion that we will do each day. Basically the Jesse tree walks you through to Jesus birth and all the events leading up to it. He is the "grand finale" so to speak...anyhow, this is what we are planning on doing...let me know what you think!

  2. that is a great idea!!! I have never really done anything like that....but I was kind of thinking of making a gift tree and each day having the girls write down a "gift" they have from the Lord and put it on the tree...like they are giving it back to Him.....then on Christmas morning have them read all their gifts and realizing the greatest gift of all was Jesus.
