The Gift of Love - DVD
This is the video that I received

CHRISTMAS STORY & (3) ART LESSONS: Rejoice, Away in a Manger, Portrait of Mary! The Gift of Love is a Christmas story, artfully brought to life through the captivating expressions of chalk-art, music and drama. approx. run time 143 minutes
At first glance, I thought that my kids wouldn't really be interested in it...It isn't flashy, or computer animated, you know...the stuff that kids "like" nowadays...

We just finished watching it, and probably had it on for close to 2 hours!!  I watched the storytelling part with the whole family, and they were all quite engaged in the drawings.  It was neat that there was an artist drawing along throughout the story and that at the end we saw the final picture...all glowing with the black light.  My kids have never seen anything like that before, and even I thought it was cool!!

Then, after watching that first part, we clicked over to the drawing lessons.

Now, I have a few kids who like to draw, but one in particular who really takes her time and loves to learn new techniques...That would be 9 year old (yes, she is 9 in 4 days!!) Cutie Pie (otherwise known as Grace).  Her teacher had told me earlier in the year that Grace is one of the better artists in her grade 4 class.  That was cool to hear, and I tell her that she is great all the time, but she isn't that confident.  So, this is an area that I wanted to work with her on and help her grow the confidence that she needs!!

We first started with the Away in a Manger clip and she drew along with the video.  We paused it regularly so she could catch up, but she was able to grasp the different techniques that were talked about and the different "language", like how to hold the pencil and shading etc...

This was her end result:

It was nice that she was able to follow along with the instructions and I think ended up with an amazing picture!!  These are skills that she will be able to use in her future art projects.

The next clip we checked out was the creative lettering one, it was called Rejoice.  For this clip, the 5 year old, Pooky (otherwise known as Hope) wanted to join in, so she grabbed a pencil and paper and sat down with us.

These were the results of the girls following this clip:

This was Graces creative writing - the "O" is actually baby Jesus

I thought it was cute the the O became baby Jesus:-)

This is Hopes creative writing...for a kid who is just learning to read and write, she didn't do too bad

The whole time that the girls were working on their art (along with the video) the 12 year old, Princess, aka Keri, was watching too.  I think she thought it was cool too, and really didn't complain while watching it.  She was even helping out the younger ones with their projects.  So, she may be "too cool" for some things...but I know better;-)

All in all, the movie was a hit here.  I think that if you have anyone who would like to be able to learn to draw, this is a great resource.  It was easy to understand, it held my kids attentions and I love the part that it has a meaningful lesson there...not just the art part, but the kids are learning about God and following along with the story.

The artist and her final product!!  She is putting it in a frame for her gradnparents Christmas gift:-)
The company has offered me a copy of the video for a giveaway...
